The Richard Mitchell House is a Greek Revival, two story frame dwelling over a Flemish bond brick raised basement. Mitchell built the house in 1841 after purchasing a large building lot from Richard Carrington. Mitchell sold the house in 1845 and it remained occupied by various owners up until the 1950’s. The house later fell into disrepair as rental property. It was purchased in the 1980’s by The Historic Richmond Foundation with hopes of saving it. After a number of sales, the house was rehabilitated in 2007-08.

The original center hall plan with room each side remains. A one-bedroom apartment is featured at the ground level. A three-bedroom apartment occupies the top two floors. A new rear addition provides space for kitchens and baths. A new back porch faces east and is shaded by a large Sycamore tree. The Historic Richmond Foundation holds covenants on the property and the work followed the Secretary of the Interior’s Standards for Rehabilitation of Historic Properties.
